Tech YouTubers like LTT and Gamers Nexus already steered a lot of volunteers to FAH. These channels have an existing large audience of tech enthusiasts who already have the hardware, and LTT became one of the largest folding teams almost over night.

When it comes to molecular biology and medicine, there are already free lectures and symposia posted online - and though some of it might be on YouTube, most of it would be found via academic journals and websites dedicated to that. If you're interested in the Covid-19 research, Medcram.com has free videos on that which goes down to the molecular biology but tries to make it accessible to the lay person; some of their videos are on YouTube as well.

So existing content with large audiences covers everything from how to build and cool a PC to how molecules bind to receptors in the body. The only underserved niche content left would be "folding as a hobby". The ideas about "how to make a supercomputer out of e-waste" and "how to fold in the most energy efficient way" would be content which I would watch, but I think that is better made by a folding enthusiast or by an existing tech channel than by an official FAH channel.

Quite a few of those got famous while following trendy topics and clickbaits while producing sensationalist content (some of them still do). Others are producing tech themed content which people want to watch. We cannot compare molecular dynamics vs how to build a cool PC no one ever be able to afford.

There is an official FAH YouTube channel already and it is pretty much deserted.
What it is about here is a Folding Tech channel: a tech channel that would always link its production to folding. CPUs and GPUs would be tested with FAH cores, and ranked accordingly. Hardware would be judged as for its merits for (24/7) folding, which is arguably more intensive than any other use case around. OS too would be judged in this light. No-one else does that and quite probably ever will. It puts on its head a lot of the other rankings of the industry (hello Apple?), and encourage producers to better integrate FAH needs.

FAH already is a supercomputer, arguably the most powerful available, and it is using a good deal of "e-waste". Who else could rival this?

Would you really trust just any tech channel as for the best way to fold efficiently? As if anyone would know, could offer such a perfect solution... On this Folding Tech channel, you would soon have dozens of videos on that topic, with ten times more examples of realizations in this domain. And you could take your pick.

Actually, the most popular videos of the Folding Tech channel probably will be devoted to folding setups and their critical appraisal (by insiders).

Have you taken a look at the program? viewtopic.php?p=341595#p341595 Really nothing that would capture your attention?

Really? FAH actually is the most powerful computer in existence. It "contains" thousands of PCs, some of which extremely high-end, and whole farms of them, and we certainly can show them. On a Folding Tech channel. Don't you think people would want to watch this? And in the same time understand what that mean for healthcare, for the future of medicine?

I think there is a lot of merit to adding to the existing or creating a new Youtube channel. And I also think it could be done without taking researchers and those more "hands on" into the project work away from the important tasks they are doing. Just here on the forums I've seen that some people have impressive rigs and hardware just to fold. Others test for efficient hardware, and one of them has a web page dedicated to testing such things. And just offhand, I can think of several forum regulars that run lots of older systems and still generated a lot of science through their efforts.

Done properly with a base theme of something along the lines of "get folding people!" a tech channel could help show the world how anyone with a modern computer and even limited financial means can probably still help some, and those with bigger wallets and the desire to make a hobby out of it can contribute more. It seems like there is folding done at every level here, from those that can barely meet deadlines, to blazing fast modern systems generating a lot of science contribution daily. And let's face it, most anyone who has ever overclocked ANYTHING on a computer usually wants a benchmark to prove that it's working faster. And folding can be both the benchmark and a great stability test for hardware.

Nobody should be using Folding at Home to test stability. That could compromise the science results. Unlike projects like Einstein@Home where every work unit is done by at least two participants, each Folding at Home work unit is done by only one computer - unless the computer detects the error itself.

At least use FAHBench rather than production FAH if you're going to benchmark.

Agreed, and poor use of wording on my part. I don't think anyone should suggest to use a work unit for stability testing, or just for a benchmark, but let's face it, only folding simulates the load of folding. But as a note on that, when playing with the GPU on my system, I used exhaustive stress testing to check for stability. After reaching a point I was sure it was stable, it crashed running an actual work unit. FAH bench combined with several other stress tests were all run at the same time while doing stability testing, and it was solid as a rock.

So in the end, regardless of attempts to check stability, it seems that folding found instability in my system and the rigs of many others as well. Maybe with the right settings FAH bench would dig deeper, or maybe many of us just don't use the right software/benchmarks/stress tests to really stress the GPU enough to make sure it's 100% folding stable. But those are the kinds of things that a tech channel might address.

And here's a real world personal example of how a tech channel might help the cause. I work with a guy that is a fairly heavy gamer. He has a 1660ti in his rig for this purpose. But he won't do any folding, as he "has heard" that it will burn up your gear. I've tried to convince him otherwise, but to no avail.

"burn up your gear" is another way to say "fully stress the stability of my overclock"

If his cooling solution isn't adequate, we can't help him except to repeat (one more time) "FAH does not support overclocking." You might remind him that modern CPUs will throttle themselves to prevent damage if they get too hot.

And so will modern GPUs if their protections aren't overridden.

My suggestion would be to ask your friend if you can pass on references to burning up your gear. Once we know what information the person is relying on, we can provide further insight and rather than convincing the person, provide links and references. Allow them to make an informed decision. It might take a while and there's no guarantee but it might help others in future if they search on Google and come across this thread :)
