When will 2nd, 3rd, 4th wave of 3000 series come about

Post by rickoic »

Anyone heard anything about how the supply chain is working for them?

Are they made in China where everything seems to be working at a snails pace?

Chips are made in South Korea (Samsung Foundries) and generally assembled in Taiwan and China. With associated parts made in China, Japan and the surrounding areas.

Might depend on repeated waves of human malware...

Seems to me that we are still waiting for the first wave...

With the pushback of the 3070 release I wonder if they are switching as much production as possible to the 3070 so they have more supply when released so it does not appear like a paper release like the 3080 and 3090 did.

Nvidia probably will flood the market (3080, 3090, and 3070) just when AMD release their new GPUs.

I wondered about something like this as well, the 30xx releases have been surprizingly limited and seems to be comprised of only two models: the RTX Outofstock and the RTX Arrivingsoon.

Shipments usually take 1 to 2 months to arrive.
The 3080 got released in September. We can expect the next shipment in end October to mid November.

Let's hope that the next shipment contains more than a few dozen items. :D

A few dozen???? That barely qualifies as a small sample.......

Right. That's my sarcastic response to the previous 'small sample' shipments.

They grossly underestimated the demand for it.
The initial batch was barely enough for all early reviewers.
With a launch price of $600-700, I think Nvidia thought the 3080 would be out of hands of too many people.
However still a lot of people were running GT/GTX 1000 series GPUs, who all were eager to get that RTX 2080 Ti performance for half the price.

They grossly underestimated the demand, or they didn't get the number of chips they needed from Samsung. Which is more likely?
The next real wave will likely be based on TSMC chips and that may bring a real progress in performance per watt. And as for TSMC, the 7nm process (which would be much better then the Samsung 8nm one) is already old news, we can hope that the new wave, in 2021, won't be much more expensive.
But the real progress will come with the 5nm process, that is already in production, just not for GPUs. And TSMC is already working on their 3nm process.
I'm afraid that the reputation of the year 2020 won't be saved by Nvidia 30xx series Graphics cards...
