What GPU and Power Supply are you using?
Cuda enabled workunits use more power than OpenCL and this could be causing some instability. Also overclocks can become unstable overtime. Is your CPU overclocked?

Thanks.

I was running Windows 7.0 on one of my systems, and had issues w/CUDA while running a GT 1030. So let me offer a temporary work around that has been posted elsewhere on the forums.

Code: Select all

Open FAHControl > Click on "Configure" > Click on "Expert" tab > Under "Extra Core Options" click "Add"

When a new pop-up box appears, enter the following w/o the quote marks: "--disable-cuda" > Click "Ok" > Click "Save".
Try updating your NVIDIA video drivers to 456.71, and see if that helps before you use the work around (above).

Paul

Disclosure: The above referenced Windows 7.0 system is now running Fedora 32.

FYI, while using the workaround to disable CUDA and use OpenCL is okay, it would be better to investigate and resolve the underlying issue. Reason is that you can gain significant improvement for science without any hardware upgrade.

I'm noticing that more frequently..... I'm taking a few minutes to look at the log segments to see if I see anything that I can at least do a Google search to find an answer.

Now you know why I have not signed up for the Beta team. I'm needing to use Google to find answers for some of my Fedora questions (that are not necessarily F@H related).

But, that's partially how one learns--reading the advice of experienced users.

Moreover, we all started somewhere... maybe searching on Yahoo/Altavista since Google wasn't there yet :P

I did update the NVidia driver to 456.71 but that didn't make a difference. With OpenCL the gpu is running at about 80 degrees C, and 83 with CUDA. The max temp. according to NVidia is 92. So it doesn't look like heat is an issue.

My other computer has a GEForce RTX 2070 and has never had a FAH error either before, or after the switch to CUDA.

As the 980ti is rather old, I have just disabled CUDA for now. Once the new NVidia RTX 3070 becomes available, I'll upgrade to it and try again with CUDA on this computer.

Once FahCore_22 version 0.0.14 (or newer) is released, I would suggest that you try CUDA to see what happens.

If you're overclocking (just a guess), set it back to the default clocks. You'll gain more performance by running CUDA at default clocks that you ever could by overclocking. FAH does not support overclocking for reasons that often look like your logs.

Nope, no overclocking of either the CPU or the GPU.

An update to say that my old GeForce GTX 980 Ti failed last week. Totally dead.

I was hoping it would last long enough for me to find a new RTX 3070 in stock someplace. As that didn't happen, I replaced it with another RTX 2070 which has been using CUDA and has run for a week now with no errors.

So this FAH error was really a hardware issue.

If you want to do experiment you can try to revive your old GPU.

I don't know for sure that the original error was from failing hardware but it sure looks that way.

After years of service, and more recently working OK with CUDA work units, it started giving intermittent errors. And then it totally failed. No fans or anything. At 5 years old, it isn't ancient but each year of folding is probably the same as several years of normal activity.

I was planning to replace it anyway. It just forced me to do it sooner than I'd planned.

That is what I love about using cards that have a heat sink/fin -v- a fan. Unless you catch the fan wearing out early enough, and can get a replacement that works with that card, you are replacing the card w/o any further questions needing to be asked.

However, that logic only gives you a limited number of cards to work with. So perhaps looking for a card from a manufacturer who provides decent customer support after the sale (even if you spend a few extra dollars/Yen/Euro's for their product -v- a cheaper competitor).

For that reason, I'm limiting my selection of replacement GPU cards to those made by EVGA; Gigabyte; ASUS; NVidia; and PNY (should I need the professional grade RTX series cards).
