Seriously...it affects them more then it affects us. We don't have units to fold for a few hours, big deal. It's more about that they are losing science with the downed server then us having a few points less today. A bonus is that you're saving Electricity since your GPU is idling, so think of it as a $ bonus for your hard work instead of complaining.

Exactly because this is not a only a game for points (PROFESSIONAL).
Also i do not understand .Why is there no personal 24 hours standby for Servers.
Spending electricity for ideling is wasted .

Do you really think it's in their best interest for the server to be down? It's computing. These things happen. It will be back up soon.

What I don't understand is why they don't have more servers for GPU2 clients yet, considering how large of a group it is already.

Honestly, it is kinda hard to believe that only 1 server handles the whole Nvidia GPU2 project.

I've only ran 1 GPU2 client on a single 8800GT because I know the whole project is at the mercy of 1 lone server.
Why invest in more Nvidia cards when its obvious that its just going to keep going down due to massive work unit overload.

Guess its time to up the GPU2 WU points to around 2000 per unit to help bring down the workload on this 1 lonely overworked server

P.S. The last holiday outage wasn't fixed until the following Monday morning, so if this one get repaired/reset before then, I'll be surprised

Well, it's still in beta, so I wouldn't expect allot of servers being dedicated yet. It cost money to have support personnel to maintain servers. They may use students, but of course, there are not allot around during the summer.

In the mean time, patience is a virtue.

Actually, the ppl at Stanford haven't actually given us a reason for the server downage (always at about the same time, though on random days)? Is it server overload, or power shortages? And how are they planning to fix these in the coming weeks?

Should be back up now. Some times there are issues which need human intervention, so these things need to wait until we wake up -- it's ~8:45am right now and yes we do need to sleep a little bit here and there ;) The real question is why people didn't get routed to the backup server. We'll look into this. My first guess is that the shorter WU's are causing buildup in various aspects of Linux over time and we should move to longer WU's to increase its reliability.

While we're using the test WU's, no new science is being conducted so Stanford really isn't losing anything while the server is down. Once the client comes out of beta, however, the impact of a server outage will be much more serious for their work.

Professor Pande said they were setting up a back-up server after the last outage. I wonder why that hasn't finished, yet? It' possible it WAS finished, but the backup didn't take over when the primary went down. Another reason why it's a good thing the client is still in beta. Get the bugs in the system (not just the client) out now before it goes "live".
