Endless Repeated Core Errors on Acquisition Attempt

Post by rayearle »

I am relatively new to FAH and have it running on four computers, three of them without incident. However on the newest one, an Alienware laptop, I can only get it to process the first work unit successfully. When it tries to get the next work unit (I used to do distributed work for UD and every piece was termed a work unit), it downloads around 782,0000 bytes and then fails with core error and tries to download it again, gets to around 782,0000 bytes and fails with core error again ad infinitum. A couple of reinstalls of FAH (including the beta) have resulted in the same scenario (i.e. processed the first work unit successfully then fails repeatedly trying to acquire the next one). My suspicion is I'm getting a bad work unit. My questions are how do I dump this work unit and get a DIFFERENT one and how to I notify support that I believe I have a problem work unit.

We would also like to see the first 30 lines of your fahlog.txt file, to see which client you are using, initial settings, etc.

P.S. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the foldingforum, rayearle

What firewall / anti-spyware software do you have on that machine? Is it different than the others? Is there an exception granted which permits the fah client to connect to the internet?

I don't see anything in the portions of FAHlog that you posted that you should be worried about.
Project: 3608 (Run 26, Clone 4, Gen 3) was downloaded and it needed FahCore_81.exe (which is another name for "Folding@Home Gromacs Simulated Tempering Core") and the WorkUnit was completed an results were uploaded. Then Project: 3680 (Run 45, Clone 9, Gen 5) was downloaded which needed FahCore_80.exe (which another name for "Folding@Home Gromacs SREM Core"). That WU is 81% completed and I see no reason why it won't be finished soon.

The Folding@Home project is, in reality, a collection of many different projects using quite a few FahCore's (which is another name for different analysis methods). Check the Project Summary page and notice the column "Code" which lists the different FahCore's (by yet another set of names).

I obviously had looked at the log too, while editing it and before sending it, and noticed nothing apparently abnormal. However I restarted the laptop in question a few minutes ago and it currently shows;

Waiting for Core: Step 231

Message in lower left corner: Core download error (#9), waiting before retry...

I'll let it run until morning and we'll see where it is then...

Well it's now twelve hours later and it's now working but Frames Completed is 0/1500 and Finished WUs remains at 1 and the log file has not been updated past what I previously sent (i.e. last modified 01/09/2008), which seems odd to me.

Sounds like it''s not folding for some reason - easiest way to check is look in the task manager for the latest core. Or it might be working really slowly if you "crashed" for some reason. Re-booting might solve the issue.

No I think that when I looked at it this morning, it had finally just started, after nearly twelve hours of trying to. It had shortly thereafter completed 15 and has as of now completed 90/1500. Obviously it should not take 12 hours from acquisition to initial start up! It hasn't logged any activity since early A.M. on the 9th. I can not find any way to turn logging on or off. Any ideas as to why?
