Because a CPU can deal with large atoms, GPUs are limited to the amount of atoms they (efficiently) can process.
If a GPU needs to process too many more atoms than it has GPU cores, the increase in PCIE bandwidth will slow the whole unit down.
CPUs don't suffer from that inasmuch, in that they have a more direct connection to the RAM.

FAH creates Work Units for CPUs and Work Units for GPUs. By default, FAHClient will create slots for all of your hardware but using FAHControl, you can manage what resources you are donating to FAH.
