SMP work servers in yo-yo mode? [No, try client upgrade]

Post by hyphessobrycon »

I'm not consistently able to get WUs for my SMP machine. Sometimes, it'll pick up another one immediately on completing one, and other times, hours will go by before it gets one. The log looks as expected:

Code: Select all

[19:09:23] + Attempting to get work packet
[19:09:23] Passkey found
[19:09:23] - Will indicate memory of 4096 MB
[19:09:23] - Connecting to assignment server
[19:09:23] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[19:09:24] Posted data.
[19:09:24] Initial: 0000; + No appropriate work server was available; will try again in a bit.
[19:09:24] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[19:09:24] - Attempt #7 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.

...etc. Anybody else seeing this?

Can you post details on your client? Have you upgraded to v7 yet or 6.33+? If you're still using a 6.2x client, that may be the problem.

Oh... Yeah, I have an old client, one of the 6.x series. I'll upgrade and see if that helps.

Many thanks!

Supporting Kasson's statements, Dr. Pande's blog post mentioned this: http://folding.typepad.com/news/2011/11 ... a-fix.html
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

Yup, that was it. I picked up the 7.1.38 client, and it started chugging away immediately.

Thanks to you both!

That is a bit of a problem for people running on older Macs. I have a server running OS X 10.5.8, which can't be updated. The v7 clients require OS X 10.6.4 or later, and v6.33 isn't available for OS X yet. Luckily my main folding machines can (are are) using v7, but some of the old ones are going to be out of commission for a while it sounds like.
