Low GPU Usage

Post by Xostas »

Hi, I am folding on CPU and GPU but my GPU usage only goes up to 2% never higher! Why can't I use 100% of my GPU?

CPU stays around 80/90% as expected.

I have chosen full folding power on advanced mode

Thanks for your help.

I assume you're folding on Windows & using the Activity Monitor to check your GPU usage. Activity Monitor doesn't accurately show the work that F@H is doing on the video card. Supposedly there is a way to fix that, but I'm unfamiliar with the details. You can also use a third party GPU monitor like MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z to get a better picture of what's going on with your GPU (this is what I do).

Thanks, I am following my GPU usage via MSI Afterburner that shows always 1-2% never higher, also got GPU temps that are very mild do not correlate to a very high GPU activity. The FAH is folding using the GPU that is for sure because the percentage moves changes but looks very slow.

Re: Low GPU Usage

Post by jonault »

Well, you're definitely folding on your GPU. I've had one P11779 WU, and I was getting about 30 seconds/frame on a RTX2080Ti, where you're getting closer to 2 minutes per frame. Does that seem like a reasonable performance ratio for your card? You're only using 6 of your 8 CPU threads for CPU folding, so you have 1 left over for the GPU so that's not an issue. I can't tell whether your AMD drivers are up to date, that would be something to check.

One other perhaps stupid idea - are you sure MSI Afterburner is looking at your GPU? If you have the MB graphics enabled in the BIOS, MSI Afterburner will monitor that also, but if you're not actually using it for anything it would be idle.

That's all I can come up with.
