Yup, that's what I plan to do in addition to fixing the URL at the end of the video - although rather than translating the text verbatim in the transcript, I plan on using more formal English in the transcript ...

Like instead of:

"Cancer takes 2 of 8 of us.", we can say "Cancer takes nearly two out of eight of us." (I know it's more like 22% today, but that's what the original video says) ... and since "Bazillion" isn't a thing in every language ... we can settle on "Trillions", etc. etc.

Basically anything to make it more universal.

I think with "Bazillion" they were going for a quintillion vibe? Maybe? :shock:

Finding support for European languages shouldn't be difficult.

Back in the days when this video originated (more or less) Dr. Pande recruited native speakers with a goal of translating everything, not just the video. The translation team was eventually abandoned. The only member I remember who is sill around is toTOW who runs his own FAH website in his native French. (If I think about it for a while, I'll probably remember others.)

The fundamental requirement is that folks should volunteer to translate TO a language in which they are fully fluent.

I think you're right that its higher than my initial stab in the dark, but the number of actual proteins maybe lower than a quintillion (could be totally wrong since I got tired of searching for a definitive answer) It seems like studies have only come out in the last 10 years to try nailing down that number, and many articles I've seen confuse the number of individual molecules in a cell vs number of proteins. Then there's confusion - are we counting individual amino acids, polypeptides (when are enzymes not proteins?), are we including H2O in molecular count? etc, etc.

I found something that said there are about 15 billion cells in an average human body

Napkin math using yeast as an example (in lieu of human cells):

15B * 42m = 630 quadrillion

https://www.drugtargetreview.com/news/2 ... %20precise.
(no idea how reputable the article is)

It looks like my team wont be entrusted with the original video, so I'll just post the content of a hand carved .srt file with a direct transcription from the video's text content. I tried to keep the text and pacing as close to original as possible, but the timing may need to be adjusted further using an actual copy of the video.

I'll send a copy of the file to Anton so FAH can modify and add it as an English transcript to Folding@home's Youtube copy - at least this gets the ball rolling for auto-tranlations. I checked it through google translate against my native language. It's actually not too bad, save for a few odd statements (since it's translating line-by-line instead of full sentences - occasionally confusing albumin with proteins (I can correct this if asked))... If you're doing a translation in your own native language, I recommend putting it through google translate, and just making corrections as necessary. Anyway, here it is (just save this code as a text file with a .srt extension, and it should import into Youtube).

Code: Select all

1
00:00:01,00 --> 00:00:06,000
What if you could share your unused
computer power to help find a cure?

2
00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Even while you sleep ...

3
00:00:11,500 --> 00:00:14,000
You are very busy ...

4
00:00:14,500 --> 00:00:16,500
It's your proteins ...

5
00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:20,500
... they are folding like crazy

6
00:00:20,050 --> 00:00:24,000
... every second, a bazillion tiny proteins
inside you

7
00:00:24,050 --> 00:00:28,000
... are folding into a bazillion shapes

8
00:00:28,500 --> 00:00:31,500
... tiny tools your body uses

9
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,500
... to fight disease

10
00:00:35,500 --> 00:00:41,000
... That is, when they fold right

11
00:00:41,500 --> 00:00:41,500
... when they fold wrong

12
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:44,000
... disease creeps in

13
00:00:44,500 --> 00:00:48,000
... Parkinson's, Influenza, AIDS

14
00:00:48,500 --> 00:00:52,000
... Alzheimer's takes 1 of 8 of us when we get old

15
00:00:52,500 --> 00:00:57,500
... Cancer takes 2 of 8 of us, no matter how old we are.

16
00:00:58,500 --> 00:01:00,500
... and if they don't take us completely

17
00:01:00,500 --> 00:01:06,000
... they take a heavy toll

18
00:01:06,500 --> 00:01:09,495
... what can you do?

19
00:01:09,500 --> 00:01:11,500
... we're glad you asked

20
00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:14,500
... What if

21
00:01:14,750 --> 00:01:16,500
... even while you sleep

22
00:01:16,750 --> 00:01:19,500
... your computer was busy

23
00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:23,500
... busy crunching numbers

24
00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:29,000
... networked with a million other computers around the world

25
00:01:29,500 --> 00:01:31,500
... piecing together the puzzle of how those proteins work

26
00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:37,500
... Busy trying to find cures

27
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:41,000
... That's exactly what we're doing

28
00:01:41,500 --> 00:01:44,000
... While we work

29
00:01:44,500 --> 00:01:47,000
... While we do everything we already do

30
00:01:47,500 --> 00:01:52,000
... even while we sleep

31
00:01:52,500 --> 00:01:54,500
... our computers are busy folding

33
00:01:55,400 --> 00:01:56,500

... It's free to download, It's so easy

35
00:01:59,525 --> 00:02:00,500
... In just 5 minutes

36
00:02:00,525 --> 00:02:02,000
... You can be folding too

37
00:02:02,100 --> 00:02:04,500
... Remember, this is for all of us

38
00:02:02,100 --> 00:02:04,500
... For your Mom

39
00:02:04,700 --> 00:02:07,000
... For your Brother

40
00:02:09,520 --> 00:02:12,000
... For your Friend at Work

41
00:02:12,200 --> 00:02:14,500
... It might even be You

42
00:02:14,700 --> 00:02:18,000
... The work is happening right now

43
00:02:18,200 --> 00:02:20,500
... some cures might not come right away

44
00:02:20,600 --> 00:02:22,100
... but together

45
00:02:22,200 --> 00:02:25,000
... they will certainly come sooner

46
00:02:25,200 --> 00:02:28,000
... start folding

There's something going on at FAH's headquarters and everybody who can give you an official answer is deeply involved. I'm sorry, but I can't give you an authorized answer.

Thanks for the follow up. I am looking forward to do the next big thing ;)
