Welcome to the folding support forum.

The device ID has already been listed in the GPUs.txt file, the required information on how to enable it for testing is shown in your log. However it is unlikely that this GPU will be used. It is based on a Fermi GPU chip and only supports OpenCL 1.1 plus a few of the instructions from OpenCL 1.2 related to double precision (FP64) calculations. The current GPU folding requires OpenCL 1.2, past experience with Fermi based GPUs is that they may complete WUs from some projects, but on others they randomly fail.

ok, thank you for the fasr answer, this means it will not work with this old gpu, because i tried every clue from the internet to enabel the gpu folding...

The info in the log I was mentioning is:

Code: Select all

08:35:08:WARNING:FS01:Disabling beta GPU slot 01: gpu:1:0 GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3]. Beta GPUs can be tested for no points by setting ``gpu-beta=true`` in the configuration.
Setting that option in the client will get it a benchmark WU if that project is active and not out of WUs. But I understand the developers working on this have needed to spend time on other software needs recently.

Welcome to Folding@Home!
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... -540m.c702

There are two known prerequisites to folding, The device should support OpenCL 1.2 and it should support 64 Bit Floating Point math. (also called Double Precision)

Your GPU does not support OpenCL1.2 so is too old. (it is over a decade old, think dog years) If it could fold, it would fail to meet the deadlines, it is less than 1/3 as fast as a GT 1030, the weakest card that always finishes in time.

(Admitting that it will never start, and it would never finish allows us to ignore Optimus issues)

Well, somebody has to be in last place. Congratulations :D
Keep folding.
Eventually you'll move up in your team listing or somebody new will join. :)

I noticed that the log said GT 555 but techpowerup did not hint that it supported OpenCL 1.2.either.

If it would fold at all, it would be a little faster, but it won't start.

gtw, what is actually the best graphicscard for mining / folding?

The best card for FAH is the one that you have. ;)

Actually, that's not the right question. The best card for folding is not the same as the best card for mining and it's not the same as the best card for gaming. Any relatively new card will probably work but somebody else will gripe about the performance depending on which FAH project is assigned to it.

My first answer was the correct one. FAH policy is that you should NOT buy a GPU just for folding but let their software get as much performance as it can out of whatever you have.

There are many Projects, some work best on smaller cards, some work best on larger cards.

For a given protein, there are forces that act on it at each bond between atoms, more atoms, more bonds between atoms.

If you buy the largest graphics card, instead of a new car, you may find it has more cores than Bonds in your Work Unit. This is very depressing for folks who can spend thousands to own a card that is only partly used.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 3090.c3622

A smaller card, will be slower but is less unlikely to be only partially used.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 3060.c3682

(there is no smaller card in the current Nvidia generation yet, so far all RTX 3050 are in laptops)

Over time, the researchers work on larger proteins, the latest generation cards always seem to be the most power efficient.

The smaller card will work up to its limits on any protein. The larger card won't run into it's internal limitations by a smaller protein but it'll still work better than the smaller card.

If you happen to get the most powerful card available, you'll be spending money on capabilities that might be used only part of the time. I vote for mid-range cards and more of them than top-of-the-line cards.
