I thought I might have broken the forums with a post I was in the middle of crafting at the time. Thankfully not.

Old phpBB software doesn't work with newer versions of PHP ...

It has been fixed with a rollback of PHP.

Do I really want to know how long? The phpBB by-line suggests it may be well over a decade.

The current installation of phpBB has a lot of mods that are no longer supported in newer version, and no one seems to remember all the specifics of the installation ...

Modules tend to be the downfall of both forums and content management systems. One alternative might be to archive the existing forums into static pages - for the sake of preserving the knowledge contained in them - and starting anew.
