Fully patched WIN10
Machine re-booted and FAH client did not start automatically ...
started FAHClient.exe manually and the cmd box shows what looks like an error

It's a Windows install.
It sees the working directory (CWD) as being the installation directory, this is wrong. The default working directory for 7.6.21 is "C:\ProgramData\FAHClient"
I can think of a couple of reasons how this could happen:-
1). You changed the location of the data directory during install.
2). You didn't use the Folding@Home shortcut to start the client.
I'm going to suggest uninstalling the FAHClient completely, re-installing it and when asked about folder locations leave them as they are.

I can think of a couple of reasons how this could happen:-

Re 1. - Took all defaults during install
Re 2. - Most likely the cause. I had deleted the desktop icon about two weeks ago to clean up desktop, and was using the tray icon to start the web viewer. That was working until the machine rebooted. If that doesn't have the full path that the shortcut had then it's not getting all the right options.
The desktop icon is more complex then most - "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\HideConsole.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe" --open-web-control
A complete de-install and then re-install (again taking all the defaults) has the client up and running again. Another thread mentioned that the tray icon was still a work in progress, so I do not have enabled at this time. Will have to use the start menu, or make a "tile" if I want to un-clutter the desktop.

I only ever use the tray icon and fahcontrol (Advanced Control) so am surprised to read that is a work in progress. That's the only way I used it for over a decade, on multiple Windows 7 and 10 PCs

"Work in progress" = works much of the time, but variations in Windows setup, and anti-malware present can make it a pain to figure out when it doesn't.

Glad it's working.
As a note, one of the parameters of the shortcut link is the "start in" which should be "C:\ProgramData\FAHClient", this is what sets the working folder for the FAHClient program.
Something I did was when I had the FAH Advanced Control open was I right clicked its taskbar icon and "Pin to Taskbar".

It seems to me that if the application did not have the ability to work out of the box in an arbitrary folder specified during installation, this application would not have the opportunity to specify a non-standard folder for installation.
