Trying to get started- "Exception Access Violation"

Post by md365 »

I've downloaded the client for the first time and I have a WU but it just sits on "Ready" and "Waiting on FahCore Update." In the log I have been getting "03:20:27:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Win32: 0xc0000005: Exception access violation." I've tried restarting, uninstalling/reinstalling, ensuring the app has in my firewall, and even turning off my firewall. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Code: Select all

Welcome to the forum!

Your folding client shows a crash on the point right after downloading the core, when it tries to unpack it - the core is the piece of software that actually runs the folding job. Your virus scanner may be the culprit here, putting the core download in quarantine. In virtually all virus scanners, you can exclude directories from being checked by the scanner. Could you please exclude c:\ProgramData\FAHClient?

I excluded the FAHClient directory, which didn't work. I even turned off my virus scanner entirely and got the exception again. I'm definitely a bit baffled.

Uh, yeah. This is what I'd expect:

Code: Select all

20:24:31:WU00:FS00:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bit-avx2-256/a8-0.0.12/Core_a8.fah
20:24:31:WU00:FS00:Connecting to cores.foldingathome.org:80
20:24:32:WU00:FS00:FahCore a8: Downloading 7.72MiB
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:FahCore a8: Download complete
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:Valid core signature
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:Unpacked 20.93MiB to cores/cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bit-avx2-256/a8-0.0.12/Core_a8.fah/FahCore_a8.exe
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:Unpacked 2.64MiB to cores/cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bit-avx2-256/a8-0.0.12/Core_a8.fah/libfftw3f-3.dll
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:Unpacked 172.88KiB to cores/cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bit-avx2-256/a8-0.0.12/Core_a8.fah/vcomp140.dll
20:24:37:WU00:FS00:Starting
So at the point of validating the signature, your client barfs. It does not report a failure in the download, it looks like it can't access the downloaded file. EDIT: or maybe it downloaded in memory (it's only 8MB), and can't actually write it to the location where it wants to unpack (C:\ProgramData\FAHClient\cores\cores.foldingathome.org\win\64bit-avx2-256).

Getting more exotic in the suggestions: do you have checks like IPS/IDS or virus checks active in your router? No, I don't understand either, just repeating what I read before on the forum, regarding connection/download issues :)

One thing that I did see, is that you may need to upgrade the drivers for your CPU/iGPU (Which I saw was an Intel 11th Generation Core i7). The latest non-beta drivers for that CPU can be downloaded here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... ivers.html

And here is why (quoted from md365's original post):

Code: Select all

03:10:40:WARNING:FS01:Guessing ambiguous GPU to OpenCL device mapping for 01: gpu:0:2 TGL GT2 [Iris(R) Iris Xe Graphics]. Consider upgrading your graphics driver or manually setting ``opencl-index`` in this slot's configuration.
03:10:40:WARNING:FS01:Disabling beta GPU slot 01: gpu:0:2 TGL GT2 [Iris(R) Iris Xe Graphics]. Beta GPUs can be tested for no points by setting ``gpu-beta=true`` in the configuration.

It seems there was a more generic error with the core files on server, which should have been fixed. Do you still see this problem?
