Ghost fahcore_22

Post by FormerInstants »

Last weekend I set up my old computer to run folding 24/7 on an Ubuntu install. There was the usual mild complications of dealing with Ubuntu GPU drivers etc., but I thought I got it running well enough after following some instructions on this forum.

I finally checked up on it again and saw that I had a 2nd fahcore_22 running. In total, 1 instance of fahcore_a8, and 2 instances of fahcore_22. Both fahcore_22 instances are using ~25% processor and ~760 MB RAM. However, I only have 1 GPU slot showing in FAH Control (also only one showing in the slots configuration page), and when I click "pause" only one of the fahcore_22 stops, the other one continues full speed. I tried ending/killing the process, even restarted the system, and it still comes up. My stats page shows 5 clients within 7 days instead of the expected 4, so I think it is completing work units in parallel with the other one, I just can't see any kind of status for it or control it at all in the control window. I guess if it is completing work units it's not really a "major" problem, but I'd prefer to free up the CPU resources for the CPU core and let the GPU just do one at a time.

Anyone have insight to what's going on and how to fix it? I'm guessing re-installing the client would do it, but since I can't control that core, I can't tell it to "finish" and I'd be forced to abandon whatever work unit it has assigned.

Don't worry about the work unit, when the timeout gets triggered a copy of it will be assigned to another folder.
I know it's not really what you want to hear but we've all got failed or dumped work units against us.

Posting the first 100 or so lines of your log file would help in figuring out what is going on. Also look to see if there is one or more than one FAHClient process running. If there is more than one, then somehow you managed to start two separate folding clients on your system. Each client process could have a slot for the GPU defined.

Yeah, I've lost a work unit here or there too, but I like to try to avoid it if possible.
Here is my log dump. And also I do have 3x instances of FAHClient running, although I can only see the one client window.

I think you have fah installed twice.

Once with snap, which probably runs the client via systemd.

And once with the official package, probably running via init.d with —respawn.

That would explain the three client instances running.

I guess that would make sense. I tried to install it with the package I downloaded from the web site, but I couldn't get the GUI to load, assumed it failed. I then found it on the Ubuntu software center and it came up just fine. Though I find it weird that two GPU clients are running and not two CPU clients...

I'm not really much of a wizard with Ubuntu though. If there's tips on offer how to properly uninstall the duplicate client (or even get it to finish the work unit in question first) before I start rm'ing stuff semi-haphazardly, it would be appreciated.

Cheers

First stop the service with e.g.

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/FAHClient stop
sudo killall FAHClient
(the second is in case the service launcher is broken)

Maybe copy the file /etc/fahclient/config.xml to a safe location to make sure your passkey and configuration is saved, but this might not be that important - you can re-request the passkey anyway.

Ubuntu software center allows you to uninstall packages from the GUI, just do that first. As for the officially downloaded package, you should be able to remove it with

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -P fahclient
you might also make sure that these files/folders have been removed, but the previous command should have already purged them:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/FAHClient
/var/lib/fahclient
/etc/fahclient
