Why is my GPU disabled?

Post by Koen »

Hey, I'm new to Folding...

In FAHControl, my CPU is doing just fine, but my GPU is disabled. How can I make this one work too?

Here's my setup:
OS: Windows 11 Enterprise 22H2
CPU: Intel Core i7-12800H
RAM: 32GB
GPU (display): Intel Iris Xe Graphics
GPU (render): NVIDIA RTX A200 8GB Laptop GPU

Might it be that the "gpu" in Folding is the Intel Iris instead of the NVIDIA?
But why is it disabled then?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Laptops with both an iGPU such as the Iris Xe and a discrete Nvidia GPU use Nvidia Optimus to automatically switch between them for video depending on processing needs. So normally the Nvidia RTX A200 would be inactive when the folding client software starts up and will not be usable. You will need to enable the RTX card then start up the client.

The details will depend on the exact version of Optimus implemented in your laptop, but in most recent ones you can enable it using the video control panel. Always on is what is needed for folding. You also need to be using the full driver package from Nvidia, not the download from Windows Software Update. MS just supplies video driver support, not the necessary OpenCL and CUDA GPU calculation support libraries.
