RTX 3090 not folding on light power

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

RTX 3090 not folding on light power

Post by sergiopahtc »

Hello Guys

i´ve installed an rtx3090 and i cant fold on light fold power. i get the status: waiting for idle
when i set medium or full, it starts folding.

i had another nvidia card that i could set fold on light and worked.....

is there a configuration that i need to set to start folding at light power?

thanls

Welcome to Filding@Home!

In the default configuration, that is the way F@H works in version 7.

Light uses 1/2 the CPU threads and no GPU.
Medium used all but one CPU thread and the GPU.
Full uses all CPU threads and the GPU.

In all cases the GPU is either on or off, there is no way to reduce GPU usage that is not altogether off.

There is an 'on idle' setting that runs when the OS decides the computer is idle.

In FAHControl, you might be able to right click the slot and de-select on-idle.

You don’t need light power if you set the desired number of cpus on the cpu slot.

FAHControl > Configure > Slots or some such.

Assuming you are on Windows and using version 7.6, you can get to to Advanced Control and configure, slots, cpu and set it to 0 if you want,, then the GPU slot will be the only one that runs and set the main screen to Full.

@calxalot
I think i´m not clear enough.

Im trying to fold ONLY with my GPU, not cpu

@JimboPalmer

Of course i did that.... as i just said: it worked with my other nvidia graphic card.

Set cpus 0 for the cpu slot, or delete it.
Set power to medium or full.

Power light, among other things, is supposed to run gpu slots on idle.
Stop fighting it. Power light does nothing useful for you.

A GPU slot either runs or doesn’t.
Fah Power does nothing to affect it.

Power light does exactly 3 things:
- pause-on-battery is always true
- for cpu slots, -1 means use half of logical cpus
- for gpu slots, on idle defaults to true

If you need to limit your gpu, you might try power limiting the gpu with a gpu utility.

Use MSI Afterburner or another app to power limit or otherwise make fan changes and such to your GPU. F@H controls see it as either on or off, the utilities let you adjust other aspects.
Fold them if you get them!
