RTX 4000 series new power connectors.

I am considering getting an RTX 4070ti for my folding rig to replace a RTX 2080ti and am wondering about peoples experience with this. When the 4090 and 4080 came out there were concerns about the latest power connector system and some very negative stories but this seems to be no longer in the news so assuming this not such an an issue if you use the quality 2>1 connectors. Will be connecting to an EVGA Platinum 850 PSU which is about 4 years old and currently powers the 2080ti with 2x 8 pins. Also assume the power draw of the 2080ti and 4070ti not that different.

The best theory on the cause of melting cables is the connector not being firmly plugged in, but there have supposedly been some cases of it still happening even when completely seated. The cause hasn't been 100% determined yet.

The GPUs come with an adapter, but some PSU manufacturers (Corsair for example) sell an accessory cable with 8-pins that plug directly into the PSU if you want to avoid using the adapter. Cables from other companies may not be pin-compatible with an EVGA unit and it doesn't look like EVGA sells one.

My 4070 Ti usually uses less than 220W and I've seen it sometimes as low as 180W on some WUs. The latest generation is far more power efficient than older GPUs.

I’ve had a single 4080 running for a few months now. Ensured I plugged them in tightly after published reports of that being a potential cause, and they haven’t been overly hot and appear as new still. Rest of my cards are 3080s and 3090s.

I have a couple of Zotac 4070ti (non AMP) and have had no issues with the included adapters. Most of the issues were with 4090s and the 4070tis use far less power.

If your worried about the adapters 3rd parties such as Cablemod likely can provide a native cable for an EVGA PSU.

I’ve been very impressed with efficiency of the 4070ti. Vastly superior to the 3000-series. My 4070 and 4060ti are, however, not nearly as efficient for some reason but still much better than the 3000-series equivalents.

I run the 4070ti at a max clock of 2205MHz and they daw between 85-125W yielding 6-7MPPD depending on the WU.
