why are work units no longer compressed?

Post by whocrazy »

Hi.
I am just curious to know why the work units that are assigned are not compressed like they used to be?
When work units are finished and are saved to disk, these also are not compressed. What was the reason for abandoning compression?
Thanks.

I do not know all of the reasons why WUs are not all compressed now. One reason though was they found the overhead of decompressing thousands of WUs per hour when received by the servers was causing problems. It would take large increases in server RAM and some processing power to fix that. There are some very large WUs that are distributed compressed.

As far as I know, WU and results can still be compressed ... but it's a setting that the researcher has to enable, so if files remains small, it's not needed.
