too high RAM usage makes machine almost unusable

Intel I7 9700k, nVidia GeForce gtx 1050, 16 GB RAM, 2 HDDs

The client worked fine for a few days and suddenly RAM usage:
FAH_Client = ca. 7 GB
FAH-Core a9 = ca. 1 GB
FAH-Core_23 = ca. 1 GB

2 WUs are running, one running 3 CPU cores and one running on nVidia card.

If RAM usage is so high my machine becomes almost unresponsive because so much stuff is put into the windows gagefile.sys

Is this some kind of runaway condition or memory-leak possibly or is it normal that the work units can be so demanding?

That looks like a memory leak problem. FAH-Client doesn't do any actual WU processing, that is done in the folding cores. It just handles logging, downloads and uploads connected to WU processing.

Which OS is this running on? I don't see any memory leak on my macOS systems, fah-client is using less than 100 MB of RAM. But there have been leaks in the past, in one case it was tracked down to a particular version of one of the libraries used and the OS it was compiled for.

This is extremely abnormal.
Please post much more information. FAH has two client versions right now.
What OS?
What client version
Have you downloaded any new updates (OS/Driver)
Have you checked if you didn't catch some sort of malware?
If it is fahclient v7, then your computer might be infected
If it is v8, is it the latest build,and again, what OS?
