No Control of Processor Use

Mod note: merged two first posts into single topic

I just installed v 7.6.13 of the controller package. The processor control switch appears to be non functional. The processor runs full-tilt, no matter what setting the control switch is on. I'll be unable to participate unless I can resolve this problem. Please help!

I assume you are talking about the Power slider in the Web Control interface, at https://client.foldingathome.org/ ?

You can have a better control of the processor use with Advanced Control (aka FAHControl). Once there, click Configure -> Slots -> double-clic CPU and replace the "-1" in the CPUs field with the number of threads you want to allocate to FAH. Half of your processor's threads would be a good place to start.

Mac laptop with i7 quad processor. OS Version 10.11.6
F@H CPU Controller - Light / Medium / Heavy - Switch appears to have no effect on processor use.
I'll be unable to participate unless I can have some processor control.
Battery is charging @2.5 A and making 0% charging headway with the CPU Switch set to "Light".

You have 4 core processor with hyperthreading switched on so effectively an 8 core processor if I am reading your log correctly ... The WU you have has been downloaded as a 3 core WU ... WUs never use more cores than the number of cores they have been downloaded for.

Can't spot the CPU slot details but if it is set as -1 then the client will probably allocate 7 or 8 cores (depending on whether it puts one aside for a GPU - not sure that happens on MacOS) ... Heavy would use all those cores (but the WU is only a 3core WU so uses three) - Medium would use heavy less one core (so 6/7 but again WU is 3core so uses 3core) - light uses half heavy (so 3/4 but again WU is 3core) ... This would mean that whatever setting you have the power slider on the 3core WU is the limiting factor not the power slider.

If you need less then using advanced control and reducing the CPU slot to 2core ... If you need help with this ask back in this thread.

On Light, the software trys to use 1/2 the threads, F@H calls them CPUs.

So this work Unit will use 3 of the 8 CPUs you have. Medium would use 7 and Full would use 8.

I am not a MacOS user but if you can start Advanced Control I can show how to tune CPU use finer.

In Advanced Control, to the left is a Configure button, click it

Now you get a screen with a Slots tab, click it

On this white field should be a cpu item, click it and then click edit

By default F@H set the number of CPUs to -1 meaning let the software decide.

You can enter any number from 1 to 8, the number of threads your CPU supports.

F@H has difficulty with large primes and their multiples number of CPUs.
7 is always large, 5 is sometimes large, and 3 is never large. Try to choose a number that is a multiple of 2 and/or 3.
2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 are good numbers of CPUs to choose.
5 may work most of the time. 7 will bite you.

Type the number you want, and click save.

Having a MacBook Pro myself, I would limit the CPU thread count to 4 at the most, using more will activate the HT cores which uses more power and produces more heat. That can also push the CPU clock rate down due to thermal limiting.

From some other reports, power management on some of the later Retina MacBook Pro models is a bit off at times. Mine always has enough reserves enough power to charge the battery if it goes below the 95% threshold before charging will start. But what I have is a 2012 design with optical drive that I bought just over 4 years ago before it was discontinued.

Depending on which power adapter you are using, you should have some power left over for charging. The larger 80+ W adapters are better.

If the CPU still uses too much power on Light and 4 CPU Threads, open FAHControl and click on Configure and follow the directions given above to change the number to a lower value.

I assume you are talking about the Power slider in the Web Control interface, at https://client.foldingathome.org/ ?

No - I just followed your link to that interface, for the first time , just now. It has a similar "slider" to the slider that is a part of the Mac app. It appears to be a slider, but the indicator snaps between just three positions - like a 3-position switch. Please pardon the lack of information in this original post ... I wasn't actually done with it when I had to take a phone call. When I came back to the forum, the unfinished post had disappeared. I wrote a more complete one to replace it. Log is posted in that one.

You can have a better control of the processor use with Advanced Control (aka FAHControl). Once there, click Configure -> Slots -> double-clic CPU and replace the "-1" in the CPUs field with the number of threads you want to allocate to FAH. Half of your processor's threads would be a good place to start.
