Project 8018 Core 15 so low PPD why?

Post by Calcii »

Project 8018 Core 15 so low PPD why? That project eat 99% GPU Load and Temp on that very high, superstresstest for U new video card. That project not so important? So why most of project now is 8018??? I burn my videocard but not take most of PPD
So hard take bonus for that projects? I love project Folding@Home but competition is important, and when i buy top GTX780Ti i expect so high PPD but no i dont. That politics of bonuses GPU dissapoint me
Take replies with "+" if U agree. Wanna take comment from Leads of GPU projects

The ppd for core 15's appears low on a card like a gtx780ti because these have no quick return bonus like the core 17s.. These projects need to be finished so we finish them.
Remember competition may be your thing but others with the same setup face the same reduction, so it kind of evens out and better these work units than none at all.

There are no politics involved.

If you follow the fah news blog, then you saw that fahcore_15 was announced to be going end of life.

Fahcore_15 is the old kind of GPU core, so as noted above, there is no bonus. New projects will be using the newer fahcore_17 with a bonus.

This is a policy change, and a transition to better folding. However, as already noted, this improvement does mean we can stop folding the older work units until that research is complete.

Core 15 gets the same PPD today as it did last month, same as last year, same as it did before core 17 was released. Fah has always determined which work units we fold. And until the older projects are finished, I'll fold what they send me.

It may be because “big donation of time from a corporate partner” maybe provided Core 17 for their time and leaving only Core 15 for the Individual Donors.
Letting us know that FAH is going to have a big project and working with "big donation of time from a corporate partner" they could let us know so that we my stop Folding while the corporate partners complete their projects for their time give to FAH. See” Working to fix the shortage of GPU WUs” URL: https://folding.stanford.edu/home/worki ... f-gpu-wus/ for more info. Maybe if the Core 15 had been given to the corporate partners they may have completed all the Core 15 Projects and allowed us Individual Donors to keep running Core 17 and somewhat happy. Or they could at lease increase the 5757 to maybe 15757 knowing that we all do not care for Core 15 and 4 to 8 hours of hard work for a credit 5757. This is only my 2 Cents.

Or maybe everyone has been doing core 17s and completed all or most of the work that was ready to go... And maybe lots of core 15s are around as were dumped a month ago.. Or maybe something else. Why would the project give only core 17s with QRBs to an anonymous donor anyway?

Maybe the donor is running linux based client and can only fold 17s?

Or maybe, Folding@home is about:
!) saving peoples lives though better medicine
2) learning how to better model proteins so more 1) can take place
3) learning more about distributed computing so more 2) can take place

and not at all about keeping individual PC owners happy.

Thats my theory, and I can live with it.

Have to agree with JimboPalmer,

i hate these Core 15 units as much as anyone, but they need to be done, so the quicker we get them folded the quicker we can get back onto folding Core 17 units.

Just a thought - it seems like many of the Kepler/Fermi donors, including me, are getting nothing but the very stressful Project 8018 work units - see the posts above in this thread. Considering that Jingcheng Wu's charter in the Pande Group team is "to help improve communications between FAH and its donors" (see Dr. Pande's recent BLOG post New team member: meet Jingcheng Wu), maybe she could help us out with first-hand insight into PG's strategy for the GPU work units, the longevity of Core 15 work vs Core 17 work, etc.

We all signed up for folding to be able to contribute the most to the science objectives, but replacing the speculation with a little clarity never hurts for the donors.

Thanks.

Please be aware that 2 servers for Core_17 projects are currently down as can be found in the forum for topics about problems with servers. My understanding is that PG has been notified, but I have not seen any further information. In the meantime just Projects 13000 & 13001 are available as Core_17 WU's. In the meantime the older projects using Core_15 still need to be completed for the researchers.

We'll make a change on the AS to try to resolve this and get more Core17 WUs going out.

PS Jingcheng Wu will definitely be a help, but she can't work magic -- technical issues will have to get fixed by sysadmins, project/server managers, etc.

Posting here will help get us the info, especially with Mods helping funnel the most important issues to us.

PPS Our long term strategy is Core17, but there are Core15 WUs that need processing and we will run them as needed. We are pushing to get more Core17 WUs up in the next day or two, if not sooner.

No offense, but Jingcheng is not going to become everyone's personal whipping boy (pardon the gender insensitive reference) when it comes to answering unanswered questions. She will continue to follow Pande Groups policies as they currently exist, and some things simply won't be answered to everyone's satisfaction, as is required at times by the research in progress.

There will also be a learning curve for Jingcheng where she gets up to speed on all of PG's terms, technology, policies, etc. Communications will improve. It may or may change the message.
